How to get your HVAC company recommended by AI search
Last checked: November 2026
AI tools build their answers from what they can find about you, mostly your Google Business Profile, your Yelp listing and your own website. Make those complete and consistent, with a page for each service and the towns you cover. ChatGPT matters most right now. In CallRail's data, it accounted for more than 99% of AI-referred calls to home services businesses in September 2026 (CallRail).
Nobody controls who an AI tool recommends, and we can't promise you'll be named. What you can control is whether the facts it finds about you are complete and correct.
This guide is part of our AI search visibility guide for home service businesses.
How many calls this is today
It's small. CallRail tracks more than 30 million inbound calls for its customers. In September 2026, 0.616% of home services calls came from AI search, up 71% from August. That's under one call in a hundred, and the share is climbing.
Meanwhile, BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey found 45% of US adults had used ChatGPT or another AI tool for local recommendations, up from 6% the year before.
Set up your Google Business Profile the way you really work
Google's own AI features cite Business Profiles more than any other source, according to BrightLocal's study of AI citations.
- Primary category: choose the one that matches most of your calls. Whitespark's 2026 survey of local search experts ranked primary category as the top factor for the map results. That's expert opinion, not Google data.
- Services: list each one: AC repair, furnace repair, heat pump installs, duct cleaning, maintenance plans.
- Service area: hide your address if customers don't come to you, and list the cities or ZIP codes you serve, up to 20.
- Hours: list emergency hours only if someone picks up.
- Address: Google's guidelines don't allow P.O. boxes or unstaffed virtual offices.
Make your business name hard to mix up
AI tools have to work out which business you are. If another company shares or nearly shares your name, they can blend the two. Bing's guidelines ask for "clear and consistent naming for people, organizations, products, and locations."
Search your exact business name with and without your city. If another HVAC outfit with a similar name shows up, put your full name, city and license number (if your state issues one) on your website and listings, written the same way everywhere.
Give each service its own page
One page for AC repair, one for furnace repair, one for heat pumps, one for maintenance plans. Near the top of each, say what you do, which towns you cover, whether you take emergency calls, and how to book. Whitespark's experts ranked a dedicated page for each service second among AI visibility factors. Bing's guidelines say to focus each URL on a single topic and "surface key information early."
Don't create near-copies of the same page for every town. Google's AI optimization guide says mass-producing pages for search variations can violate its scaled content abuse policy. One good service page that lists your towns works better than twenty thin ones.
Get reviews on more than one site
ChatGPT cites Yelp in 80% of its local answers, per BrightLocal's study. Ask customers for reviews on Google and Yelp, and keep listings current on Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Facebook and the BBB.
Recent reviews count. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 74% of consumers said they only care about reviews from the last three months, and 89% expect the owner to reply. Never pay or offer a discount for reviews. Google prohibits incentives, and the FTC's rule on fake reviews has been in force since October 21, 2024.
Let ChatGPT's search crawler in
Check your robots.txt file and your host's security settings for OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says sites that opt out of it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI). GPTBot is a different bot, used for model training, and you can block it without affecting search. Changes take about 24 hours to register.
Also make sure Googlebot and Bingbot aren't blocked. Bing says Copilot relies on the same crawling and indexing as Bing search.
Track what you can
- Ask callers: add "AI assistant (ChatGPT, etc.)" to your how-did-you-hear list.
- Search Console: Google counts AI Overview and AI Mode traffic under the "Web" search type (Google).
- Test it yourself: ask ChatGPT for an HVAC company in your town the way a customer would. Don't put your own company name in the question.

Questions HVAC owners ask
Why does ChatGPT recommend other HVAC companies and not mine?
Nobody outside OpenAI can say for sure. Start with what it reads: check your Yelp and Google listings, make sure OAI-SearchBot can reach your site, and confirm your site has a page for the service the customer asked about.
Does ChatGPT use Google reviews?
In BrightLocal's study of local AI answers, ChatGPT cited Yelp most often, and Google Business Profile wasn't among its top sources. Google's own AI features leaned on Business Profiles.
Should I block AI bots on my website?
You can block GPTBot, which is for training, without affecting ChatGPT search. Keep OAI-SearchBot allowed if you want to appear in ChatGPT search answers.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
ChatGPT runs ads, and OpenAI uses a separate crawler for pages submitted as ads. An ad is different from being named in an answer. For Google, there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
How long does it take to show up?
There's no fixed timeline. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to register. Google says crawling can take anywhere from several days to several months.
