Why your plumbing business doesn't show up in Google AI Overviews
Last checked: November 2026
There are usually three reasons. For many searches Google doesn't show an AI Overview at all. When it does, it pulls supporting links only from pages Google has indexed and can show with a snippet. And for local plumbing searches, it leans heavily on Google Business Profiles. Most of what you can fix sits in that second and third part.
Google says that "indexing and serving isn't guaranteed," even for a page that does everything right. We can't promise you a spot in AI Overviews, and nobody else honestly can either.
This guide is part of our AI search visibility guide for home service businesses.
First, check whether an AI Overview shows up at all
Search the way a customer would, for example "water heater repair near me" or "plumber in [your town]." Try it on your phone too. Google says AI Overviews appear only when its systems decide they add something to regular results, "and as such, often don't trigger" (Google).
If there's no AI Overview for that search, there's nothing to get into. Your map listing and regular results matter more there.
Make sure Google can index your pages with a snippet
To be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, Google says a page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." There are no extra technical requirements on top of that.
Here's what to check, or ask your web person to check:
- Indexing: in Google Search Console, paste each main page into URL Inspection. It should say the page is on Google.
- Snippet tags: look for "noindex" or "nosnippet" tags on pages you want found. Either one keeps a page out.
- Crawling: make sure robots.txt, your host and any firewall or CDN let Googlebot in. Google names "any CDN or hosting infrastructure" as a place where blocks happen.
- Text, not pictures: your services, towns and phone number should be written on the page as text. A flyer image doesn't count, since Google asks that important content be "available in textual form."
- The AI setting: in Search Console, open Settings, then Search generative AI. The default includes your site. If someone set it to exclude, your content won't show in these features.
Fix your Google Business Profile
For plumbers, the Business Profile is the main source. In BrightLocal's study of AI citations, Google Business Profile made up 54% of the sources cited for plumber searches. Yelp was next at 13.8%.
- Category: set "Plumber" as your primary category if that's most of your work. Add services like drain cleaning or water heater repair under services.
- Hours: list emergency hours only if someone actually answers.
- Service area: if you go to customers, hide your address and list the cities or ZIP codes you serve. Google allows up to 20.
- Reviews: ask every customer, and reply to each review. Don't offer anything in exchange; Google prohibits it.
Write a page for each job you want calls for
Give each main job its own page: drain cleaning, water heaters, sewer lines, leak repair, repiping, whatever you actually do. Put the answer a customer wants near the top: what you fix, which towns you cover, whether you take emergency calls, and how to book.
Write from your own work. What usually causes a slow drain in older houses around you? How long does a water heater swap take? Google's AI optimization guide favors first-hand, non-commodity content and warns that churning out pages for every search variation can count as scaled content abuse. Skip the copy-paste "Plumber in Town A, Plumber in Town B" pages.
Make the page load fast on a phone
Google lists "providing a great page experience for users" as one of the basics for its AI features. A common measure is how long the main content takes to appear on a phone. Google's web.dev team says a good target is 2.5 seconds or less.
Measure it in Search Console
Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in the Search Console Performance report under the "Web" search type, mixed in with regular results (Google). Google's AI guide also points to a Generative AI performance report there. And ask new callers how they found you.
How long changes take
Changes can take a while to show. Google says "crawling can take anywhere from several days to several months." After you fix a page, you can request a recrawl in Search Console, but that doesn't skip the wait.

Questions plumbers ask
Why does my competitor show up in AI Overviews and I don't?
There's no single answer. Google pulls supporting links from indexed pages that can show a snippet, and answers change from search to search. Check indexing, snippet tags, your Business Profile and whether you have a page for that exact job.
Do I need special schema or an AI file for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there's no special schema.org structured data you need to add, and Google Search ignores llms.txt files. Regular structured data that matches your page is fine.
Can I turn AI Overviews off for my site?
Yes. Search Console has a Search generative AI control under Settings. If you exclude your site, your content won't show in those features, and you won't get traffic or impressions from them.
How do I see AI Overview traffic?
In Google Search Console, it's counted in the Performance report under the "Web" search type. Google also points to a Generative AI performance report.
How long until changes show up?
Google says crawling can take anywhere from several days to several months. You can request a recrawl in Search Console once a page is fixed.
